Garnett’s tale follows Alexis, a young soldier, who falls in love with Rose, only for her later to marry his uncle. Set against a backdrop of picturesque European locales like Southern France, Italy, and Paris, it captures the transient and often turbulent nature of human relationships. The novel would later inspire Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical adaptation in 1989, where the song “Love Changes Everything” became a popular hit. Dust-wrapper designed by Angelica Garnett, biological daughter of the painter Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell. Condition: Dust-wrapper has a half-inch closed tear to top right corner of front panel, with faint spotting to front and rear panels and interior. Spotting visible on text-block edges, front and rear pastedowns, endpapers, and title page, otherwise very good.
