Printed by Stanley Jones for Curwen Studios

Framed in oak

The evocation of the memory and experience of a place became a significant leitmotif in William Scott’s work, especially in his mature abstract images. In 1960 he met Stanley Jones, the master printer of London’s Curwen Studio, who took the artist’s printmaking in rewarding new directions. Two years later they embarked on a suite of five abstract lithographs inspired by the Hebridean Islands of Benbecula, Jura, Mingulay, Scalpay and Barra. Working side by side, they experimented with the medium, extending its textural range and visual effects. During the free execution of Barra, Scott rested his tea mug on the lithographic stone and, when lifting it, saw that an accidental ring had been left on the design. Rather than start again, the mark was judged to be amusing and complementary and remains evident in the finished work. According to Jones, this freedom from convention extended to every mark of the print.
