Until now, there was no catalogue raisonne or even a complete list of Matisse’s paintings.
Of course, there are many books and exhibition catalogues. But even the most complete of all describes only 674 paintings (in black and white), without any commentary. Moreover, very few people study the origins of the works. The work, generally presented as “the reference book” on Matisse (Pierre Schneider’s), despite its immense qualities, presents only 261 paintings.
This study has brought together 1399 paintings and 14 pastels, i.e. 1413 paintings (more than 90% of which are reproductions in colour) over the 65 years of the artist’s career. It is the most comprehensive ever made.
The catalogue provides a comprehensive overview and will thus serve as a basis for all subsequent studies and research that will complement and clarify it.
Text in French. Please note that this book is not available to purchase for customers in the USA.
