This is the first catalogue raisonné ever published of the works of Samuel Palmer. It lists in detail Palmer’s paintings, drawings, etchings and book illustrations, and discusses their artistic and literary sources and techniques. There is also a checklist of his writings. The catalogue aims to be comprehensive – over 750 works are described; although further works may yet come to light they are unlikely to be numerous. Every catalogued work is, whenever possible, illustrated for purposes of identification, next to the catalogue entry.

Raymond Lister compiled the catalogue during an eleven-year senior research fellowship at Wolfson College, Cambridge, a period which also saw the completion of a new biography of Palmer, the catalogue Samuel Palmer and the ‘Ancients’, illustrated books on the paintings of Samuel Palmer and of William Blake, and a critical biography of Palmer’s friend George Richmond.
