Cecil Collins has an assured place among the great visionary painters of the English mystical tradition of William Blake, Samuel Palmer and others. The present essay is in two parts: a study of Collins as a major writer on the meaning and significance of art as a revelation of the soul; the second part attempts to guide the reader towards an authentic approach to the painter’s intention. Also included is the first reprint of the artist’s seminal text ‘The Anatomy of the Fool , his earliest attempt to shape the thinking behind the central motif of his thought and iconography.

The 36 plates, mostly in colour, include paintings, drawings and prints from all periods of the artist’s life rarely or never before reproduced.
