Drawing to a Close: The Final Journals of Keith Vaughan

Keith Vaughan’s journals have appeared in print in various forms, though always judiciously selected and abridged. This is the first time that an entire volume has been presented as a whole. John Lehmann first published an extended passage in his Penguin New Writing (No. 12, April, 1942). Further extracts were printed in the catalogue to Vaughan’s Whitechapel retrospective in 1962, and this led to Alan Ross publishing Keith Vaughan, Journals and Drawings 1939-1965, four years later.

Five years before he died Vaughan disclosed that ‘the whole purpose of this journal is to reveal myself as fully as possible to future readers whom I shall never know…. I shall write with the intention of being read‘ (January 28, 1972).
