In this significant work, Jekyll discusses garden ornament as it relates to architecture and she links her comments to a selection of illustrations from the Country Life photographic collection to show what should or should not be done. Folio. First edition. 1918. Original navy cloth with gilt titling. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Lavishly illustrated with black and white photographs. Tipped-in, water-colour frontispiece by George S. Elgood. Condition: boards worn and scuffed with a small damp stain to bottom edge of rear panel. Spine a little shaken with rubbing to top and tail. Webbing exposed to rear hinge. Slight foxing to endpapers and pastedowns. Presentation sticker to front endpaper. Tissue paper guarding title page worn and slightly foxed. Frontispiece page slightly foxed, otherwise very good.
