Glyn Philpot Letter

A hand-written letter by Glyn Philpot explaining artistic choices relating to his painting The Angel of the Annunciation (on page 56 of the Pallant House Catalogue).

Text reads: Dear sir, there is a pictorial tradition that the angel of the annunciation should hold a lily. In my picture, as the setting is English, I have substituted an anemone: which is, by the way, the lily of the field, referred to in the Gospels. Thank you for your kind letter.
