‘Inscape’ is a new monograph publication that celebrates the life and work of the recently deceased Gordon Baldwin, a seminal artist of British Studio Pottery and the New Ceramic. The 280-page publication brings together the widest record of Baldwin’s ceramic sculpture in over 750 images from museums, galleries and private collections around the world, together with his little-known drawings and unpublished poetry for the first time. The publication offers long overdue recognition of the groundbreaking artist, curator and teacher, and offers a full assessment of the artist’s wide creative output.

Arranged according to the major decades of Baldwin’s career, each chapter begins with an explanatory text by Natalie Baerselman le Gros (Curator, Writer and Editor specialising in ceramic arts). It also features essays on Baldwin’s curatorial activities by Helen Walsh (Curator of Ceramics at the Centre of Ceramic Art, York) and on Baldwin’s poetry by Anthony Gardner (Author, Poet and Journalist). The publication concludes with testimonials from key figures taught or influenced by Baldwin.

This monograph has been published independently by a group of admirers, in collaboration with the artist and his family. It is something of a passion project and is not generated for profit. All sales of the book go towards recouping the costs of the project and any profit is allocated to develop the next phase: to secure a major exhibition of Baldwin’s work in the UK.
