“When I began writing this journal in 1939 it was certainly not with the thought that it might be published and possibly even read. Its purpose was therapeutic and consolatory. Faced at the age of twenty-seven with what then seemed the likelihood of imminent extinction before I had properly got started, it was an attempt to analyse and understand a state of total confusion and defeat. The people I knew then were mostly too concerned with getting actively involved with things to have much former states of mind, and in any case I tended to form passionate relationships rather than mature and stable ones.The journal thus begun has continued with intervals to the present day, in selecting from forty-eight notebooks the present text I have tried to hold a reasonable balance between introspection and objective recording.” Condition: very good in good/heavily worn dust-wrapper.
