Keith Vaughan: The Photographs

This is the first book to explore Vaughan’s photographic work. Written by Gerard Hastings, the author of Drawing to Close: The Final Journals of Keith Vaughan, this new title draws together recently discovered archives, private collections, rare negatives and unseen documentation, Gerard Hastings presents Vaughan’s photographs of his lovers, models, landscapes, portraits, still-lives, ballets, domestic scenes and the artist’s travels in North Africa and Greece.

Known primarily as painter, Keith Vaughan was also a photographer. Photography was a central activity in his professional life and his images witness enormous social changes and shifts in attitudes. The camera supported Vaughan’s work as a painter, assisting him in observing the world and in exploring both geographical landscapes, and the terrain of the male form. Knowledge of Vaughan’s lesser-known photography broadens our understanding of his better-known painting and gives us an insight into how his unique vision originated.
