Margaret Wells was born in 1909. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and then with Leon Underwood. She was primarily a wood-engraver but also made a number of bold linocuts, some in colour, and continued working until her death in 1998. The Fleece Press published Margaret Wells: a selection of her wood-engravings in 1985 and J.L.Carr published Margaret Wells’ picture book in 1989. Linda Holmes wrote an article ‘Margaret Wells and Leon Underwood’, Matrix 14,1994. Otherwise little of the work of this delightful artist has been published or exhibited in public. Maggie McCune has written a personal memoir of her aunt and Jeremy Greenwood has written a note on the work and compiled the catalogue. 76 pages, 355 x 250mm, with 93 illustrations (10 in colour), printed on Stockwell acid-free paper, bound in quarter cloth with a pattern paper based on a wood-engraving, in a slipcase.
