“In this book we have made a collection of the Parables which our Lord told to the people who came to hear him. These Parables are vivid and very wise; they show us what was uppermost in his mind and nearest to his heart. We have chosen to give you the stories without the explanations which sometimes followed them; we think you will like to read them just as they stand.

Learned people do not always agree on how many Parables there are, but here you will find the principal ones and a few others too. Some that we include are sayings rather than stories, but they are all about the kingdom of Heaven and from them we can learn a great deal about that kingdom.

Claudia Freedman has made beautiful border designs, and you will see that the little pictures enclosed in the borders illustrate the chief Parable on each page.”
