Pompeo Batoni (1708–1787) was one of the most celebrated painters in Rome in his day. For decades he portrayed international travellers on the Grand Tour, creating some of the most memorable portraits of the eighteenth century. His religious, historical, and mythological works were also highly valued by patrons across Europe.
