A near-complete collection of the Puffin Picture Book series, published by Penguin between 1940 and 1965. Inspired by the brightly-coloured lithographed books mass-produced in the Soviet Union, these books were intended to be both entertaining and instructive, providing a valuable introduction to certain topics and ideas for children between the ages of 7 and 14.
The majority of early Puffin Picture Books were produced by autolithography where the artist drew directly onto the plate, frequently at the printers. After the Second World War, photolithography was more widely used. Artists who contributed included James Holland, Richard Chopping, Enid Marx, S.R. Badmin and Edward Bawden.
With only eleven omissions, this collection represents a rare and valuable set. The majority of these titles are in very good condition. To find out more about individual titles, please click here.
