Scarce catalogue featuring a cover designed by Duncan Grant for an important group exhibition of modern English art at Birrell and Garnett Bookshop in 1921. Birrell and Garnett, managed by Francis Birrell and David Garnett, both lovers and admirers of Duncan Grant, operated from 1919 to 1924. “There is no doubt that many people find difficulty in appreciating much of the sincere art of today. Although a great deal has been written in books and periodicals in order to try to remove such difficulties, perhaps it is not out of place in this small volume of reproductions of the works of certain English painters to go over the ground once more. That is by suggesting a way of approach to modern painting and sculpture” The exhibition includes works by Bernard Adeney, Boris Anrep, George Barne, Keith Baynes, Vanessa Bell, Frank Dobson, Roger Fry, Mark Gertler, Duncan Grant, F. Griffith, Nina Hamnett, E. McKnight Kauffer, Rupert Lee, Therese Lessore, Bernard Meninsky, John Nash, Paul Nash, F.J. Porter, Anne Estelle Rice, Elliot Seabrooke, Matthew Smith, and Edward Wadsworth. Condition: binding fragile and detached from covers. Some spotting to prelims, otherwise very good.
