This edition, published for the exhibition Edward Bawden: Storyteller at Morley College, Lambeth, 2014, is reproduced from Bawden’s original in a private collection.

Edward Bawden spent much of 1944 as a war artist in the Middle East and Italy. To fill his time, he drew a series of miniature storybooks, parodying Victorian moral tales, for his children Richard and Joanna, and sent them back to Essex. Ten books were made, of which nine were redrawn for publication in a single volume Hold Fast by Your Teeth (Routledge, 1963). Take the Broom was issued  in 1952, at the original size, redrawn for lithographic printing by Bawden’s friend and colleague Sheila Robinson  (who appears as ‘Ant Robinson’), published in an edition of 350 by George Rainbird and Ruari McLean ‘for presentation to their friends and to friends of the artist’.
