The Cornfield was painted in 1918 after John and his brother Paul returned to England after serving on the Western Front. The brothers rented a studio in Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire and would paint for their own pleasure after six o’clock, when their war commissions had been completed for the day. This beautiful English landscape captures the long shadows cast by the evening sun across a golden field of corn.
