The theme is the contrast between the decade of the twenties – years of confidence, happiness and boom in which poverty and ill-will amongst men seemed to be on the point of being banished for ever – and the thirties – years of slump, of widespread ruin and of growing awareness that evil was a positive force which would have to be fought.  Condition: dust-wrapper toned and worn to edges with some faint spotting. Spotting to pastedowns, endpapers, prelims, and edges of text-block, otherwise very good.
