Gaunt’s lively account of the rise of modern art, plus his two other works on the Aesthetic movement and Victorian Classicism. All three from the library of the pioneering modernist theatre practitioner and wood engraver, Edward Craig. With Craig’s ownership signature and copious annotations throughout. The March of the Moderns contains a loosely inserted typed letter from Gaunt to Craig. “It was a great pleasure to have your letter and I am delighted to know you have liked those books of mine – especially am I pleased with a favourable mention of The March of the Moderns which for some reason or other aroused anger and ran a gauntlet of adverse criticism”, Gaunt writes.
Condition: very good copies with repaired dust-wrappers and annotations by Craig. Also contains loosely inserted photographs and postcards.
