Rothenstein grew up on a farm in the Cotswolds – in fact lived in the country all his life. Farm scenes, machinery, work, the relationship between labourer and the land was content for so much of his work. Here we have the sculptural forms of farm machinery, with a turkey central picture. Texture is used to good effect, reminding of ploughed field and skyscape; but colour is equally well employed: strong blacks; deep greys and greens; vibrant blue and burnished gold.
