Throughout her career, British photographer Hannah Starkey (b. 1971) has meticulously choreographed photographs which have determinedly engaged with the way women are represented in contemporary culture. Starkey reveals women in moments of private reflection, alienation or social interaction that might otherwise go unseen.

This catalogue accompanies the exhibition Hannah Starkey: In Real Life at The Hepworth Wakefield. As the first major survey of the artist’s practice, the show traces the development of Starkey’s work across two decades since the late 1990s to the present day. This exhibition explores her fascination with the powerful presence of women from those she encountered growing up in Belfast to street protestors in London. On display will be a range of new work made by the artist as well as commissioned photographs created with young women in Wakefield, West Yorkshire in 2022.
