In this study Dr. Hodin has analysed the spirit and significance for our time of Ben Nicholson, who has just been awarded the first international prize for painting by the Guggenheim Foundation.

In the essay he ventures upon the burning problem of contemporary art. The essay forms a contribution not only to the comprehension of the question of abstraction in general, and of the significance of geometric figures in art in particular; it also attempts to resolve the function of the classic, harmonious and the balanced in a time disturbed by formless expressionist and apocalyptic notions.

The author has written a number of books and articles in this sphere and was recently awarded the first prize for art criticism in an international competition organized by the Biennale at Venice.

Condition: yellow cloth boards worn to extremities. Good only dust-jacket with numerous tape-repairs and some missing segments. Endpapers toned.
