Monograph presenting 51 of Watkins’ iconic black-and-white images, primarily taken during his travels in the Columbia River region in 1867 and later between 1882 and 1885. Watkins, one of the most significant American landscape photographers of the 19th century, was known for his “mammoth-plate” photography. His work in the Columbia River Gorge is particularly famous for its technical excellence and the unique documentation it provides of the American West before large-scale industrialization. Condition: dust-wrapper a little marked and worn to edges with faint staining to right side of front panel and to board beneath. Spotting to both front and rear boards. Creasing to top edge of edge of front endpaper, otherwise very good.
