As a precaution against design work drying up, McConnell co-founded Face, a photosetting business inspired by a trip to the United States, where the new technology was better established. He used his design skills to promote the company, and also recruited talented contemporaries (such as John Gorham, who sublet studio space from him) to design posters and other promotional materials.
