THE REVIVAL of non-industrial—that is to say hand made—pottery after its near extinction in the face of the factory system has been a major achievement for the crafts of Britain. Although the origins of the modern movement can be seen in the reaction to late Victorian life by William Morris and others, it is the individual artist potters such as Bernard Leach and William Straite Murray who really made this regeneration possible. Today with the Craftsmen Potters Association, a recently reformed Crafts Centre, and a Council of Industrial Design deeply interested in the crafts, hand made pottery is becoming more a part of everyday life, as well as a vehicle for industrial expression.

The present book takes a cross section of the potters in this country now, and hints at possible developments in the future.

Michael Casson is a potter who has witnessed at first hand this remarkable growth of interest since the war.

Condition: spotting to wrapper, pastedowns and endpapers. Wrapper a little worn with some creasing to top edge.
