Josef Herman’s long and wonderfully productive career is celebrated in this book, published to coincide with a major retrospective exhibition at Flowers East, London. Since his studies of miners made him one of Britain’s best known artists in the 1950s Herman has won wide recognition for the integrity, power and beauty of his work. This book describes his life and travels, including the eleven year stay in a mining village in the Swansea Valley, where Herman perfected his formidable technique as a painter and draughtsman. This technique has been put to the service of a profoundly emotional artistic drive devoted to many media and motifs.
