In this work Mr. Read suggests that the origins and significance of art cannot be understood by regarding art as a play, or as a ritual activity serving to express emotion, or as a magical or religious symbolism. These views are too narrow. For him art is the expression of a natural functional tendency which has played an essential role in the growth of the human cognitive faculty, that is in the acquisition of knowledge in the widest sense. Condition: very good in slightly worn dust-wrapper.
