John Bellany

John Bellany (1942-2013) was a Scottish painter who was known for his figurative and expressionist style of painting. He was born in the fishing village of Port Seton, East Lothian, Scotland, and he studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1960-1965.

Bellany’s paintings often depicted the people and landscapes of his native Scotland, and he was particularly interested in the fishing industry and the lives of the fishermen. His work was often characterized by its bright colors, bold brushstrokes, and emotional intensity. Bellany’s style was heavily influenced by the expressionist movement, and he was also influenced by the work of Scottish painters such as William Gillies and Anne Redpath.
