I nominate him as Britain’s most serious, modest and greatest post-war product designer wrote Sir Terence Conran soon after David Mellor’s death in 2009.

No other British twentieth century designer achieved such diverse and wide-ranging success as David Mellor CBE, Royal Designer for Industry. Combining the skills of craftsman, manufacturer, entrepreneur, retailer, problem solver and innovator Mellor had a profound effect on all our human lives. Metalwork was the chosen métier of the designer who has often been described as the ‘cutlery king’.

Born in the steel city of Sheffield, David Mellor’s scope in designing has extended from magnificent pieces of specially commissioned craft silver to the traffic lights we stop at every day. This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of a man of unique vision. Mellor’s modernist ideals have made him a key figure through the last fifty years of British architecture and design. The final chapter focuses on Mellor’s son Corin, also a brilliantly versatile designer who is carrying on his father s traditions of skill and innovation into another century.

The book was designed by Mellor’s daughter Clare Mellor at Full Stop Design.
