Nicholson’s celebrated series of striking colour woodcuts depicting figures of late-Victorian London. Comprises twelve full-page plates, each accompanied by a page of verse by the poet, critic, and editor W. E. Henley. Together they form a vivid portrait of London life at the turn of the century. Nicholson’s sitters include The Beef-Eater, The Sandwich-Man, The Coster, The Guardsman, The Lady, The Bluecoat Boy, The Policeman, and others. A pivotal work that established Nicholson as one Britain’s most innovative printmakers and designers. Condition: Boards show evidence of previous separation from spine and have been rebacked with a later black cloth repair covering the joint and extending onto both boards. Boards a little grubby and marked with some rubbing to corners and edges. Spotting to pastedowns and and endpapers. Light toning to pages containing text, otherwise very good.
