In 1930 pioneering female gallerist Lucy Wertheim opened The Wertheim Gallery in London. Wertheim challenged the established art scene conventions; she was a woman without formal art training, driven by intuition and a belief that young British artists should have the same opportunities as their European counterparts. Inscribed by Lucy Wertheim: “To Ethel Warwick with affectionate greetings on her birthday from Lucy Wertheim”. Warwick was a British stage actress and artist’s model, known for her dynamic presence in both theatre and visual art. She modelled for Herbert Draper, who featured her in works like The Lament for Icarus. She became a favoured model for painters including John William Godward and Linley Sambourne, and even posed for James McNeill Whistler. Condition: Black cloth boards soiled and lightly worn to extremities. Some cockling and faint water staining to edges of plates.
