Produced in watercolour, ink and pencil in 1933, ‘The Thames at Hammersmith’ captures a very particular moment in time. A labourer is hard at work building a new slipway and a car passes by on the road. On Chiswick Eyot are osier beds for the harvesting of willow for basket-making. In the distance a boat glides past in the bright summer light with which this painting is infused.
