‘Published in 1852, it is set in the England of the later Stuarts, when political and religious feelings ran high. Its eponymous hero, enamoured of the Jacobite Lady Castlewood and her wayward daughter Beatrix, distinguishes himself in Marlborough’s campaigns against Louis XIV, but comes to grief in an ingenious but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to depose George I in favour of the Old Pretender.’  Hardcover in original slipcase.  Number 435 of 1500 copies printed on cream cartridge paper by John B. Watkins Company. 36 pen drawings hand-coloured. Signed by Ardizzone to colophon.    Brocade covered boards.  Green morocco title label to spine.  Binding strong.  Pages clean.  Condition: Spine a little rubbed to base.  Slipcase sunned, a little shelf-worn to edges and bumped to top of spine, otherwise very good.
