‘The Monongahela’ is an American river on the Allegheny Plateau in West Virginia and South Western Pennsylvania. The name derives from the Native American meaning ‘falling banks’ (see Monongahela print). Morgantown is in West Virginia, United States.

In this print particularly we can see why it is that Lazzell is often hailed as an interpreter of early twentieth century European modernist trends to an American public. Although it is easy to discern content here, the style is one step back from the kind of abstract blocks of colour Lazzell would use in her more fully blown abstract works.
