Stephen Hudson’s inscription reads as follows:

My dear John,

I want you to have this book. Begin by reading from p.210 to p274. If that means as much to you as I hope, begin at the beginning and read it slowly to the end. For me this is one of the greatest books ever written and though of course, it were better to know the preceding volumes, this one is complete in itself and is the key to the whole work.

Ever yours affectionately, Stephen Hudson
