Vanessa Bell was an English painter and interior designer who was a member of the Bloomsbury Group, a set of English writers, intellectuals, philosophers, and artists who collectively came together in the first half of the 20th century. Bell was inspired by the bright colours and bold forms associated with abstraction. In 1912 she depicted her sister and esteemed author Virginia Woolf sat on a deck chair in the garden of Charleston House.
