This is a fantastic study of a major modern architect. Charles Holden (1875–1960) was the last of the arts and crafts and the first of the moderns.

The book includes designs which were never built as well as accounts of the evolutionary stages and struggles of those which were. The architectural historian Gavin Stamp has added a foreword and the book has no fewer than 335 black and white illustrations and 58 in colour, appendices of Holden’s chronology and works and an utterly comprehensive index. The book won a prize! It was awarded the Alice Davies Hitchcock Medallion by the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain, for being the best architecture book of 2007.
