Edward Johnston revived the lost craft of calligraphy and exerted an immense influence upon almost every form of lettering both in England and on the Continent. His own work in type designing, and that of his pupil, Eric Gill, changed the whole course of British printing. His influence extended over the whole of the Western world, ranging from the lettering for the London Underground to the rarest of illuminated manuscripts.

Now, for the first time, his story has been told — that of a man devoid of personal ambition who was inspired by his love of the book and to rediscover techniques which had been lost with the invention of printing and, by training up students, to make calligraphy a living craft. Priscilla Johnston’s biography is a beautifully written study of her father remarkable for its insight.

Foreword by Sir Sydney Cockerell.
