Harold Swanwick 1866-1929: Rural Life and Landscapes (2023)

Andrew Forrest’s book brings to new light the art of Harold Swanwick (1866-1929), whose paintings lovingly record aspects of the British landscape and rural life from the late nineteenth century until the 1920’s. Swanwick’s empathy with his subject-matter resonates with contemporary concerns for the natural environment and its preservation.

The book explores the Artist’s training, influences, travels, themes, exhibitions and other key elements of his life – including his marriage and move from Cheshire to the village of Wilmington in Sussex. Here, in oils and watercolours, he evoked the rolling contours of the South Downs and the traditional farming practices that they nurtured.
