Ex-library copy with usual stamps and labels. Scarce and scholarly monograph based on the author’s Harvard University doctoral dissertation (1979). Published as part of the Outstanding Dissertations in the Fine Arts series. This two-volume study is the first comprehensive examination of the life and work of the English portrait miniaturist Isaac Oliver (c.1565–1617), situating his practice within the artistic, political, and cultural contexts of the courts of Elizabeth I and James I.

Volume I presents a critical study of Oliver’s career, including his training under Nicholas Hilliard, his stylistic development, and his engagement with continental artistic influences. Particular attention is given to systems of patronage at the Tudor and early Stuart courts, and to the function of portrait miniatures as objects of diplomacy, gift exchange, and personal devotion.

Volume II provides a catalogue raisonné of Oliver’s works, with detailed entries that address attribution, iconography, provenance, and technique.
