‘Oh Helen, I roam my room, 1973’ Print by Patrick Caulfield

‘Oh Helen, I roam my room’ is taken from a series of twenty-two vibrant images by Patrick Caulfield called ‘Some Poems of Jules Laforgue’. Created as complementary images to the text rather than illustrations, the melancholy atmosphere of Caulfield’s interiors find a direct counterpart in Laforgue’s poetry. Caulfield was a great admirer of the work of the French poet Jules Laforgue (1860-1887) since first reading it in 1961.
