With photographs by John Milner. We did not set out to record the glories of Chichester Cathedral and the grandeur of Arundel Castle; the Regency treasures of Brighton and the historic show-pieces of Lewes; the association of Kipling, the Meynells, Shelley, Blake, and hosts of others — all these and many more, which have been recorded countless times. Instead of Kipling, we tell you something about Charlotte Smith. Instead of Chichester Cathedral, we go to a wayside church and discover on its faded walls a legacy of Byzantium. Instead of staring in wonder at the dignity of Arundel Castle, we go to a little back street, to an insignificant house, and discover there the story of a craftsman. In short, we have aimed to describe the little-known Sussex — people and things which have been seldom or never recorded elsewhere in books. Condition: dust-wrapper a little worn to extremities and lightly tanned to rear panel.
