Signed by David Gentleman to title page. The book chronicles the Brookes’ experience after settling in Suffolk in 1928, a time when the area had limited connections to the outside world. Communication relied on a twice-weekly horse-drawn cart journey to the nearest market town, which could take up to three hours. In a period of high unemployment, the Brookes established a fruit farm, integrating themselves into the local community and gaining insight into Suffolk’s unique dialect and customs. Condition: some light wear to dust jacket. Previous owner’s signature to front endpaper.
