Nevinson’s stark vision of mechanised warfare. Two volumes. 1917 and 1918. Cloth-backed boards with printed title labels to spines and upper covers. Illustrated with 25 plates in each volume. Introductions by P. G. Konody (Modern War, 24 pages.) and J. E. Crawford Flitch respectively (19 pages). Colour frontispieces in both volumes, each signed to bottom right corner by Nevinson in pencil.

C.R.W. Nevinson was one of the most important, colourful, and talked about artists of his generation. In the turbulent days of pre-World War I London, he gained notoriety as England’s only Futurist, and during the war he produced some of the most memorable and harrowing images of that conflict.

The Great War Condition: Boards lightly worn and a little bumped at the extremities, with a few faint marks and the shadow of a former label to the lower-right corner of the rear board. Cloth spine lightly worn at the head and tail, with minor loss affecting the “Nevinson” title label. A very faint library stamp is present in the lower-left corner of the front endpaper. Bookseller’s sticker to the lower-left corner of the rear pastedown, together with a worn patch and brown glue residue from a removed label.

Modern War Condition: Boards a little marked. Small yellow mark to title label on upper board. Cloth spine a little rubbed and faded. Heavy toning to both endpapers. Previous owners signatures (one crossed out) in pen to front endpaper. A little cracking to top corner of front hinge. Spine a little shaken.
