William McTaggart (1835-1910) is probably the most outstanding and original landscape painter Scotland has produced. Born when Sir David Wilkie was still alive, McTaggart lived to see the emergence of Cubism, Futurism and Expressionism. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he did not seek out the more lucrative opportunities available to artists in London, but spent his entire career in Scotland-a career of consistent development. He has been an important influence on successive generations of Scottish artists. Condition: previous owner’s signature to top right corner of front endpaper. Some light wear to dust-jacket, otherwise very good.
